How to Add the Veteran Designation to Your DL/ID Card

New Veteran Designation
Effective November 12, 2015, eligible veterans have the opportunity to add the word “VETERAN” to the front of their DL/ID card to indicate that they have served in the U.S. Military.  It can also play a critical role in enabling access to certain privileges, benefits, or compensation associated with being a veteran without having to carry and produce a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.
To apply for the veteran designation on your DL/ID card, you will need to:
Obtain a Veteran Status Verification Form (VSD-001) which will be issued by the County Veteran Service Office. This form is not available from DMV.
Bring the completed VSD-001 to a DMV field office. For faster service, make sure to make an appointment to visit a DMV field office.
Complete and pay the application fee for the Driver License or Identification Card Application/Commercial Driver License Application (DL 44/44C).
Pay an additional $5 fee to add the veteran designation to your DL/ID card.
Once all requirements have been met, a DL/ID card with the word "VETERAN" will be issued.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) collaborates with the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) to offer veterans of the United States (U.S.) Military the opportunity to request benefit information. Veterans can request benefit information whenever they submit to the DMV a Driver License or Identification Card Application,  Commercial Driver License Application form or when renewing their driver license or identification (DL/ID) card online by checking the "Yes" box when asked if they would like to receive veteran benefit information. As a result, the DMV will forward the contact information to CalVet to provide benefit information to the requesting veteran.

VVA and AVVA members.

We are doing our best to come out of the Covid 19 years and hoping to return to the glory of our chapter’s history. This is what has always been our busy season and we miss the good ole days.

We will be participating in the Memorial Day activities at the Eternal Valley Cemetery on the 30th. We will need members to carry branch flags, man our refreshment table, and be involved in the flag placement in the days before the 30th.  The march in and out is about 150 feet each way.  Many of our usual volunteers are running at half speed or even less with sprains, strains, fractures, surgeries and all that jazz. Volunteer now and send me your availability so I can share it with the board and event coordinators. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE AS THIS IS 2 WEEKS AWAY.

We will also be involved in the Fourth of July parade again in Santa Clarita. If we have enough volunteers to carry flags around the same parade route, we will have the marchers. We’re trying to figure out a simpler way to create a senior friendly float and are looking for vehicles. We will skip the hay bales because of the extra difficulty in borrowing them and the weight of the bales that increase as our physical strength decreases. The chapter has plenty of folding chairs to make us comfortable. We will need to be ready at the parade route start early to get parking and to lightly decorate our rolling stock. Please make sure that you wear something comfortable, in layers that can be adapted to the heat of the day. We’ll have water, etc. but YOU BRING THE SUNSCREEN, HATS AND APPROPRIATE SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR OWN HEALTH CIRCUMSTANCES.

LET US KNOW IF YOU WILL BE AVAILABLE AND WILLING TO JOIN US. WE NEED TO KNOW THE NUMBER OF VEHICLES WE REQUIRE NOW SO WE’RE READY.
